It wasn't just given to him, it was hard fought and won. In some ways this means that who he is today wasn't effortless. He still remembers the cry-baby that he was. He points out to Noya that life won't be any fun or interesting if he never is willing to try new things.Īnd Noya changes his life philosophy at a young age. His Grandpa forces him to "man-up" essentially though. He was afraid of everything, a wailing fearful boy. Just to name a few, he was afraid of Dogs, and bikes, and he still hates moths and onions. He was, by his own account, afraid of everything. It was learned behavior, his Grandpa instilled in him. He just pushes forward, relentlessly.īut now we know, this isn't his natural state. He's a ball of energy and he just simply doesn't seem afraid of anything. We learn pretty early on too that he has some weaknesses on the court, like his overhands, but we see that they don't stop him. He shows up, steals a lot of attention, makes his friend cry over how cool he is (Tanaka) and in general just bursts into the story in such a way that he seems fearless. He enters the story with a bang, in a whirlwind, like a storm. It wasn't a huge drawn out flashback, and it isn't something we have visited again in the story, but it speaks volumes about Nishinoya and who he is. He is a more complex character than many give him credit for.īut instead of all of the varied facets of his character we could talk about, I want to focus in on one very important detail, that we just recently learned. He's both loud, bold and also humble and hard-working. He only truly boasts about his skills when it is what his team needs to hear to keep them motivated. The fact that he rarely views his own performance on the court as as good as it should be, or could be. We could spend a huge amount of time discussion how hard-working he is, and how hard he is on himself. We could spend ages talking about how his height and physical build and appearance plays into his character and how others view him. Alright, there's a lot that can be said about Nishinoya, but in my opinion, a lot of it doesn't need to be said.
